    Fish Island Bridge

In this picture you can see the Fish Island bridge in Hackney, which connects the Stadium area with the local neighbourhood, the bridge has steps where there could have been a slope, even if just to wheel the bike.

The use of the same material across the junction for the bicycle path makes for good affordance, but an incremental improvement might be to reduce the corner radius to slow cars, perhaps adding a level change with a ramp to slow the cars further.

I think the next incremental change here would be to tighten the curb radius and have a more pronounced ramp for the cars, this would help to define the priority of the cycle path and slow the cars further.

    The hague modal filters

A picture from the Hague, with a confusing layout, multi-modal filters and bollards. Lots of hazards in the dark I would think.

The next steps would be to add some affordance, to aid proper traffic flow and improve safety.

Hi, my name is Mark Woodgate and I’m an urban designer from the UK.

    1) What areas of expertise do you identify with? I have been a cyclist since my school years, I am very keen to explore the role of lighting in safety for cycling infrastructure and in how to make the cycle the first choice for urban transport.
    2) How do you think your unique perspective will enhance our collective understanding of designing for cycling? I have to commute by car, it is too far to travel by bike, and to expensive to use public transport to bridge the gap. The three factors that prevent me from cycling more:
No separation from car and bus traffic
    No secure bike parking
    Poor road maintenance
    3) If you wish, leave your name & contact & social media information here so other course members can get in touch with you.
