Urban Mobility Explained
How can storytelling be a key tool towards car-free cities? | The case of Copenhagen
Storytelling is about telling stories, and it is about using them to engage an audience, or to make something clearer. In the transport sector, the car industry has become a master storyteller, but overall there is a lack of alternative storytelling and sustainable urban imaginaries. Have you ever thought about the role that storytelling can play in shaping successful planning processes of car-reducing or car-free initiatives? This was the master thesis subject of Wiebke Müller (Innovation Lifecycle Officer at EIT Urban Mobility) and Sine Sola Vivien Olesen (Mobility Consultant at Urban Creators). In this video, UMX travelled to Copenhagen to know more about storytelling and how creating positive stories around sustainable urban initiatives can contribute to making our cities more liveable.
Many thanks to Wiebke Müller (Innovation Lifecycle Officer at EIT Urban Mobility), Sine Sola Vivien Olesen (Mobility Consultant at Urban Creators), Malene Freudendal-Pedersen (Professor of Urban Planning at Aalborg University) and Annette Kayser (Project Manager at the City of Copenhagen) for participating in this video!

How is historic transit integrated into the urban fabric of Budapest? | City Unboxed with George Liu
Did you know that Budapest (Hungary) is home to continental Europe’s oldest underground metro line. Budapest has a very fascinating history. The city was originally two separate cities: Buda and Pest, divided by the Danube River. During World War II, all the bridges that connect the two portions of the cities were destroyed. And thereafter, they’ve built two metro lines and nine bridges that connect the two halves in the modern day. George Liu – Urban Mobility Researcher – was very curious to discover all this for himself. In this video, part of the City Unboxed series produced in collaboration with the Urban Cycling Institute, George gives us a tour of Budapest by walking, cycling and public transit to finally give the city a Human Mobility Score!

Is your city well ranked on urban health? | With Mark Nieuwenhuijsen
What is the health burden related to air pollution or the lack of green space? In 2021, ISGlobal analysed more than 1,000 cities in more than 30 European countries to evaluate various environmental exposures related to urban and transport planning (such as air pollution, lack of exposure to green spaces, noise from road traffic and heat island effects) in these cities. From the data they collected, they created the ISGlobal Ranking of Cities, establishing different types of city ranking: air pollution ranking and green space ranking. In this new UMX video, we travelled to Barcelona (Spain) to learn more about this ongoing research project with Mark Nieuwenhuijsen, Director of the Urban Planning, Environment and Health Initiative at ISGlobal.
Note: Since our shooting in spring 2022, ISGlobal is also sharing data on noise from road traffic in European cities but did not establish any noise ranking because “the estimates for European cities were considered not comparable due to issues related to data formats and quality”.

How did Austria implement a nationwide unlimited transit pass?
In October 2021, Austria took a drastic step to tackle carbon emissions in the transportation sector and introduced an innovative measure to promote the use of public transport and thus act against global warming: the “KlimaTicket Ö”. This “climate ticket” allows people to use all public transport in the country for 1,095 euros per year, or three euros per day. In this new video, UMX travelled to Vienna (Austria) to know more about this national unlimited transit pass and understand how it got implemented.
Many thanks to Leonore Gewessler (Federal Minister for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology), Florian Binder (Head of the Mobility & KlimaTicket Department) and Daniel Zindanci (KlimaTicket User) for participating in this video!

Mobility as a Service | URBAN MOBILITY SIMPLY EXPLAINED
Do you know what MaaS is? In this video, we took out our brushes to explain quickly and in the simplest way possible how it works and how it can transform our cities.
Many thanks to Hans Arby (Senior Researcher at RISE – Research Institute of Sweden) for participating in script writing, and to François Grimonprez (Founder of Quidos) for his creative pencil strokes.
What can be learned from urban mobility in Prague? | City Unboxed with George Liu
Situated on the Vltava River, Prague is the capital and the largest city in the Czech Republic. It is home to 1.3 million residents and claiming to have one of the best public transportation systems in Europe. George Liu – Urban Mobility Researcher – was very curious to discover it for himself. In this video, part of the City Unboxed series produced in collaboration with the Urban Cycling Institute, George gives us a tour of Prague by walking, cycling and public transit to finally give the city a Human Mobility Score!
