Ana MelendezParticipant
Hi, my name is Ana. Although I grew up in Madrid and have lived in several other cities, I am now living in San Sebastián, Spain. So I will comment on the gender differences there.
The differences in mobility habits between men and women in San Sebastián are no exception to what has been stated in the course. Women walk and use public transport more than men,. Men use private motorised vehicles, as well as bicycles, more than women.
The division of labour by gender, both productive and reproductive labour, can also explain these differences. Women still carry a large part of the reproductive work: the percentage of trips for shopping and errands domestic-family is 58% higher in the case of women than in men. Their transportation trips are usually be carried out in close and central environments, accessible on foot and by public transport.
Family income is another factor that explains the different mobility habits of the population. In San Sebastián, the neighbourhoods with the highest income are the ones that make the greatest use of private vehicles. In contrast, the neighbourhoods with the lowest income are among those who make the most use of public transportation. Personal income varies according to different factors, one being gender. In San Sebastián, women earn on average less than men (€18,232 compared to €25,249).
