Hi, I’m a mobility consultant from Belgium, Antwerp.

In Belgium, the gender gap in transport use isn’t very noticeable during the day. However, once night falls, it becomes much more apparent that public transport—such as trains, metros, and trams—is primarily used by men. For women, using public transport after dark can often feel intimidating and unsafe.

Another noticeable difference is in the use of e-scooters, which are especially popular in Antwerp. These are predominantly used by men, and users often ride at high speeds, sometimes in ways that feel reckless or unsafe for others.
