1) Safety and security: when making proposals to the municipalities fr implementing new cycle infraestructure, we can include this dimension of safety and security in the urban design.
Barriers: the municipalities dont even care about cycling infraestructure … This is one more thing to teach them
2) Diversity and inclusion: be conscious about the gender balance in our team – board members, associates, volunteers.
Barriers: some man of our team don’t understand the importance of this measure, and we have to again explain.

Sexual harassment is something I have experienced, and when I tell this to almost every man, they tend to ignore me, because they cannot understand or have empathy. It’s the same with other measures (campaigns about inclusion, quota system for all genders to be able to access the same positions/jobs). For them, all we need is cycle infraestructure (becasue that’s what they also benefit from).Inês Sarti PascoalParticipantHello, I am Inês, from Portugal. I am member of a local association promoting bicycle as urban mobility (MUBi).
What I can say about gender data inside my organization:
Board members
2018-2020: 100% male (11 men)
2020-2022: 91% male (11 men, 1 women)
2022-2024: we are really trying to change thisNew Associates
2018: 19% women
2019: 19% women
2020: 25% women
2021: 30% womenAction plan
In 2020, we started to focus on the gender disparity, doing some changes in the communication, type of partnerships. In 2021, we designed an action plan with some goals to reach/measures/activities. In 2022 we started a women’s working group.
Some results from this work:
– Increase in Communications team of volunteers women from 33% (2020) to 60% (2021)
– Increase in Lisbon team from 10% (2020) to 31% (2021)
– Increase in social media female followers in the project “Bike Fridays” from 29,5% (2020) to 35% (2021).We believe this happened because of our communication strategy, with more information about gender, but also because of more infraestructure in some cities, like Lisbon…
