Foothill Blvd in Oakland, CA is a shared street in East Oakland. Lanes are very wide until this intersection but drivers insist on staying close to people on bikes when driving on this street. At this particular intersection, the road goes from two lanes of car traffic to one. The lane on the left becomes a turning lane with no signage or paint to alert people, which results in cars swerving over to the right at the last second because they’re caught off guard or in order to get in front of people on bikes.

This looks very similar to my example from Alameda, CA. Except ours is largely recreational unless you live on the street the cycle track is on. As far as improvements go, yes, making the lanes wider to accommodate riding side-by-side would be great. As well as some physical separation from the parked cars. Given that widening the lane would mean taking more space from cars, I foresee some more of that opposition you previously encountered in the first fight for the cycle track. I suppose it depends on how many travel lanes still exist.

I’m a bicycle mechanic with a bicycle advocacy nonprofit. My work helps get people in underserved communities on bikes because what’s the point of infrastructure if people don’t have bikes to use it? Our focus is mostly on transportation justice.
I don’t know that my work can help everyone but if you live in a city/area that often sees bikes abandoned around town or school campuses I can share how we redistribute bikes like that to the community so that everyone can have the same chance at getting around free of cost. -
