Greetings from Rajkot, India. I am Padmadip Joshi, a project management professional with a civil engineering background, an alumnus of NICMAR, Pune, and CEPT University, Ahmedabad. I am a Certified Associate in project management and Lean six sigma (Green Belt). I currently work as an NMT Intern at ICLEI South Asia for #Cycles4Change Challenge Rajkot Smart City.

I am a Senior Mentor at NICMAR Startup club and run a Podcast Channel with two of my batchmates ‘Conversations with Reinforced Engineers’. I am even fond of writing articles and have successfully published two articles at metro rail magazines, and on Linkedin as well.

In the past I did the course by HUMANKIND ‘Designing the CYcling City’ and that cleared few doors of opportunities for me to work with Urban Consultants working on NMT infrastructure. I am here to learn, understand the global trends, and apply it for my pilot projects. Happy to connect with you all!

At last, I would also like to thank Trey Hahn for designing the course and helping me with the financial aid.

The existing cycling infrastructure near my neighborhood is of Hard category.  But it seems due to encroachments, and lack of awareness amongst the citizens. It is neither being used nor helping in reducing traffic from the streets. In fact facilities like Schools, Fuel Stations are making it even harder for citizens to even cross from that portion.

I request you to please share insights to design such pockets on the route to ensure the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.

Also, I would love to see more things on the presentation while recording the classes from Instructors. It makes things more clear at the time of watching the videos.

    Thank You,

    Padmadip

The cycling infrastructure seemed very efficient at the beginning of its new facility. But it is planned at the adjacent to commercial buildings, people use this infrastructure to park their vehicles, open their gates and put goods on the tracks. Many roadside vegetable sellers also stand on the infrastructure. Even due to lack of signage and discontinuous infrastructure people are completely unaware with the purpose of such tracks.

Major Issues: Encroachments, illegal parking, roadside stalls, lack of cyclist, and high vehicular movement is the reason of failing such beautiful infrastructure in the city.

    a) what incremental improvement would you recommend for this particular example:

The bike lane is strongly connected with safer infrastructure. With heavy vehicles on the streets, lane as wide as 1.5 m would be advisable for expansion. Or the effective use of walkways on the roadside can be used for slow cycling and pedestrian movements. It is already separated from the existing road that could work just fine with little signage, and warning instructions for safety.

    b) what kind of political and bureaucratic opposition this improvement would likely encounter:

    – Obviously the street is not fit to accommodate any sort of parking facilities

    – It will create an unsafe environment for pedestrians as a cyclist would use the same space as them

    – Situations can become unease during maintenance on sides of streets as seen in the image as well

Designated cycle track with 1.5 m width in Rajkot, Gujarat. It is part of the smart city mission in India.

We face issues of discontinuity of tracks due to local obstructions, or sudden change in gradient, etc. But people are coming out strong and using the infrastructure for work, leisure, play, etc.

    Greeting everyone,

I am Padmadip Joshi from Rajkot, India. Project management professional (PMI-CAPM with a civil engineering background.

    1) What areas of expertise do you identify with?

I recently graduated with a post-graduation degree in project management. In the past, I was involved in two infrastructure projects related to transport as part of my internship. Which gave me real insights on the project initiation analysis and how projects get approval for its implementation.

Areas of expertise/interests: Market research, Project Proposal, Financial Analysis, traffic and demand forecast analysis, and deep understanding of project management

    2) How do you think your unique perspective will enhance our collective understanding of designing for cycling?

I understand the fragments of detailed project reports and can effectively identify root cause in cities’ infrastructure. I am planning to help my city design a safe infrastructure for cycling. I am an urban transport enthusiast, who likes to promote and work on public transportation and NMT modes for better cities. Safety along with encouragement to all for cycling is the goal of better infrastructure.

    3) If you wish, leave your name & contact & social media information here so other course members can get in touch with you.
